Abstract
Background: The dengue virus is a major cause of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Cyperus rotundus L., commonly known as nutgrass or purple nutsedge, contains flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins, which have potential as mosquito repellents. The tubers of Cyperus rotundus are processed into a spray gel to facilitate easier application. Objective: The objective of this study is to develop a spray gel repellent from Cyperus rotundus L. tuber extract that has good quality and effective repellent activity against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Method: The Cyperus rotundus L. tuber extract was prepared using the maceration method with water. The extract was then standardized to ensure quality. The standardized extract was formulated into a spray gel with varying concentrations of Carbopol 940. The formulations were evaluated for organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spread ability, spray time, drying time, and stability. The repellent activity was tested on 18 volunteers by spraying the gel on their hands to assess its effectiveness against Aedes aegypti. The data were analyzed statistically using One Way ANOVA to determine significant differences between formulations. Results: The Cyperus rotundus L. tuber extract met the standardization requirements. The spray gel formulations of Cyperus rotundus L. demonstrated good physical quality and effective repellent activity. The percentage protection values against mosquitoes for each formula were: F1 74.04%, F2 74.32% and F3 77.44%. Statistical analysis indicated that there were no significant differences in mosquito protection percentages among the different formulations. Conclusion: The spray gel formulations with varying Carbopol 940 from Cyperus rotundus L. aqueous extract show potential as effective repellents that meet the quality standards for such products. Suggestion: Future research should explore other types of formulations and different extracts to enhance the effectiveness and variety of repellent products
