Abstract
Background: According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding for infants under 6 months is currently 41%, with a target of reaching 70% by 2030. Breast milk production is influenced by two hormones: prolactin and oxytocin. One advantage of oxytocin massage compared to other complementary therapies is its ability to alleviate physical discomfort and mood disorders experienced by postpartum mothers, thus promoting the release of oxytocin and potentially enhancing breast milk production. Additionally, lavender aromatherapy, through inhalation, stimulates the olfactory nerves, which are then processed by the hypothalamus to activate the limbic system and anterior pituitary. This, in turn, reduces the secretion of ACTH and cortisol hormones from the adrenal glands, inhibits sympathetic activity and acetylcholine release, and increases parasympathetic system activity. Objective: To provide complementary midwifery care through oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy to facilitate breast milk production at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Method: This research employs an analytical descriptive method with a case study approach. The research subjects are sources from which data can be obtained (Arikunto, 2020). The study involved 5 postpartum mothers as the main subjects, selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The interventions of oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy were administered for 15 minutes, twice a day, over 3 days. Results: Following the intervention of oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy, an increase in breast milk production was observed. The criteria for increased milk production included: spontaneous milk flow without aid, a feeling of fullness or tension in the breasts, a ticklish sensation due to milk flow during breastfeeding, milk seeping from the nipples, audible swallowing sounds when the baby breastfeeds, and continued milk dripping after breastfeeding. Recommendation: This midwifery care approach can be used as a reference for increasing breast milk production through the application of oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy.
