Abstract

Background: Self-harm is a serious mental health issue in which an individual intentionally hurts or injures themselves. Given this phenomenon, efforts are needed to prevent self-harm behavior among adolescents at SMA N 1 Pejagoan. One such approach is non-pharmacological psychotherapy through individual therapy. A prevention strategy that can be used is the application of positive affirmations and self-talk. Objective: To determine the effect of positive affirmations and self-talk on preventing self-harm behavior among adolescents at SMA N 1 Pejagoan. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 72 respondents, divided into an intervention group (36 respondents) and a control group (36 respondents). The intervention group received positive affirmation and self-talk therapy, conducted over three sessions, each lasting one hour. The research instrument for self-harm behavior was the Self-Harm Inventory (SHI). Data were analyzed using a bivariate approach with a Paired Sample T-test. Results: Self-harm behavior in the intervention group decreased from 5.67 (15.75%) to 2.94 (8.17%), showing a reduction of 2.73 (7.58%). In the control group, self-harm behavior decreased from 5.25 (11.40%) to 1.81 (5.02%), indicating a reduction of 2.44 (6.38%). The effectiveness test results showed a p-value of 0.00 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect in both the intervention and control groups. Conclusion: Positive affirmations and self-talk are effective intervention methods for preventing self-harm behavior among adolescents, especially when applied together. Recommendation: Integrating this therapy into school counseling programs to support adolescent mental health
