Abstract
Background: Mass casualties are a leading cause of global mortality. Handling mass casualty cases in the Emergency Department (ED) requires nurses to be prepared in terms of knowledge, skills, and available facilities. This preparedness is crucial for managing emergency situations quickly and effectively, reducing mortality rates, and improving the quality of medical care provided. The preparedness of nurses is influenced by various factors, with knowledge, attitudes, skills, and the availability of facilities being key interrelated factors. Objective: To determine the relationship between the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of nurses with their preparedness in handling mass casualty cases in the Emergency Department of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Gombong. Methods: This research employed a correlational design with a prospective longitudinal approach. The sample consisted of 21 nurses, selected through total sampling. The instruments used were questionnaires, surveys, and observation sheets. The study utilized univariate and bivariate analyses, with Kendall's tau test for correlation. Results: The study found a strong positive relationship between nurses' knowledge of mass casualty handling and their preparedness, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.578 and a p-value of 0.004. Additionally, nurses' positive attitudes towards handling mass casualty cases also showed a strong relationship with their preparedness (r=0.547, p=0.004). Similarly, nurses' skills in handling mass casualty cases were positively correlated with their level of preparedness, though with a slightly lower correlation (r=0.440, p=0.032). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of nurses with their preparedness in handling mass casualty cases. Recommendations: Continuous training and education for nurses on mass casualty management are necessary to enhance their knowledge, attitudes, and skills. The implementation of regular simulations and drills in the Emergency Department is also recommended to improve preparedness and response to emergencies.
