Abstract

Background, Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) are common infectious diseases among children, often leading to serious complications and requiring prompt and accurate management. Drug interactions in children are notably high and represent one of the most frequent medication-related problems. Research Objectives, This study aimed to identify the characteristics of drug treatment, the potential for drug interactions, and the severity of drug interactions in pediatric ARI patients at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Sruweng. Research Methode, Data was collected retrospectively using a descriptive method from the medical records of 223 pediatric patients with Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) at PKU Muhammadiyah Sruweng Hospital from January to September 2024. Research Result, The most commonly used drugs were antihistamines (21.4%), analgesics/antipyretics (15.3%), bronchodilators (14%), and the antibiotics cephalosporins (53.4%) and amoxicillin (28.3%). Drug interactions were observed in 64.6% of patients, classified as major (1 case), moderate (55 cases), and minor (155 cases). Conclusion, Drug interactions occurred in 64.6% of patients, predominantly classified as minor and moderate. Recommendation, It is recommended that the hospital enhance healthcare professionals' understanding of drug interactions. Future research should expand the scope to other diseases and drug types.
