Abstract
Background: Essential oils of sandalwood (Santalum album L.) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) can be utilized for relaxation, including improving sleep quality. Both essential oils contain terpenoids, which are volatile compounds that contribute to their aroma. These essential oils are formulated into aromatherapy candles, as candles are chosen due to inhalation through burning being one of the most practical and commonly used methods in therapy. Research Objectives: This study aims to formulate aromatherapy candles that meet the required physical properties as a safe relaxation alternative to improve sleep quality. Research Methods: This research is an experimental study, in which aromatherapy candle formulations were prepared using sandalwood essential oil at concentrations of 5%, 7%, and 7% combined with lavender essential oil at concentrations of 5%, 5%, and 7%, respectively. The qualitative test for terpenoids in the essential oils was conducted using the test tube method. The physical properties of the aromatherapy candles were evaluated through organoleptic testing, burn time test, melting point test, and preference test. The effectiveness in improving elderly sleep quality was assessed using the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA and Paired Sample Test. The Result: It shows that sandalwood and lavender essential oils tested positive for terpenoids, indicated by a color change to purple and orange. These essential oils can be formulated into aromatherapy candles (formulas 1, 2, and 3) that meet the required standards, including organoleptic tests, burn time, and melting point. Formulas 2 and 3 demonstrated a better effect in improving sleep quality among the elderly. The results of the One Way ANOVA and Paired Sample Test showed a significance value of p < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: Based on the results, aromatherapy candle formulations containing sandalwood and lavender essential oils are effective in improving sleep quality in the elderly. Suggestions: Further research is needed using other types of essential oils that also have potential relaxation effects, as well as exploring new variations of base materials beyond palm wax for aromatherapy candle formulations.
