Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major health issue among the elderly and a primary risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Its management requires special attention due to physiological changes associated with aging and the risk of polypharmacy. Analyzing prescription patterns of antihypertensive medications is essential to assess the conformity of clinical practices with established guidelines, especially in primary care settings such as community health centers. Objectives:This study aims to analyze the prescription patterns of antihypertensive medications among geriatric patients at Petanahan Health Center and to examine the influence of age, gender, and Body Mass Index (BMI) on these patterns. Methods: This retrospective study utilized data that were collected from the medical records of 226 geriatric patients who had met the inclusion criteria at Petanahan Health Center. Results: The most frequently prescribed monotherapy antihypertensive agents were amlodipine (38.49%), followed by candesartan (13.27%) and captopril (6.63%). The most common combination therapy involved amlodipine and captopril (25.22%), as well as amlodipine and candesartan (15.92%). Patients aged 60–65 years represented the highest proportion of hypertensive cases (42.92%), with a female predominance (53.98%). The majority of patients (82.3%) had ideal body weight, totaling 186 individuals. Conclusions:Prescription patterns in Petanahan Health Center tend to align with guidelines, predominantly favoring Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs). However, routine evaluations are necessary to prevent polypharmacy and to improve the quality of therapy for the elderly. Recommendation; Analysing the rationality of antihypertensive drug use in geriatric patients.
