Abstract

Background, the prevention of body odor is relatively less effective when using soap and water as body wash after bathing, so various other alternatives such as the use of deodorants to prevent body odor can be considered. The use of deodorants containing high levels of chemicals poses a risk of irritation to the armpit skin, one of the harmful chemicals in deodorant formulations being chlorine. The increasing popularity of back to nature has led people to start using natural ingredients as an alternative in health and beauty products, due to their higher safety levels, ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and fewer side effects. Research Objective: to create a deodorant spray formulation combining alum (Potassium aluminum sulfate) with essential oil from green betel leaves (Piper betle L.) at various concentrations as an alternative to prevent body odor caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis. Research Method, The essential oil of green betel leaf (Piper betle L.) was tested for characteristics including specific gravity, refractive index and solubility in alcohol. Observations were made on the physical characteristics of the preparation including organoleptic test, pH test, clarity test, dry time test, spreadability test, adhesion test, spray pattern test, viscosity test. The antibacterial activity of Staphylococcus epidermidis was also observed. The results were carried out One Way Anova test which has a 95% confidence level. Research results, The characteristics of green betel leaf have a refractive index of 1.510, specific gravity of 0.899 and solubility in alcohol 2:1. The deodorant spray preparation of a combination of alum (Aluminum potassium sulfate) and green betel leaf essential oil (Piper betle L.) has met the criteria for dosage characteristics. The results of antibacterial inhibition in formula 1 5.49 ± 0.19, formula 2 6.04 ± 0.21 and formula 3 4.15 ± 0.13. The results of the LSD AOVA test (p < 0.05) state that there are significant differences in each formula. Conclusion, the deodorant spray preparation has met the criteria for the physical characteristics of the preparation. The best inhibition is in formula 2 which contains a concentration of alum (Aluminum potassium sulfate) 10% and green betel leaf essential oil (Piper betle L.) 5% with a moderate antibacterial inhibition category.
