Abstract
Background: Virgin coconut oil and moringa seed oil contain oleic acid, which has the potential to promote hair growth. Oleic acid is hydrophobic, thus it needs to be formulated into a microemulsion. A suitable combination of surfactant and co-surfactant is then evaluated in the form of a hair tonic preparation. Objective: To formulate a microemulsion combining virgin coconut oil and moringa seed oil in a hair tonic preparation and to evaluate its characteristics. Methods: This study employed an experimental method by formulating a microemulsion combining virgin coconut oil and moringa seed oil as a hair tonic. The evaluation of the microemulsion hair tonic included organoleptic properties, pH, emulsion type, viscosity, emulsification time, transmittance, stability, particle size, and polydispersity index, which were statistically analyzed using One-way ANOVA. Results: The evaluation results of the microemulsion in the F2 hair tonic formulation showed a clear appearance, pH of 6,98 ± 0,0608; conductivity of 3,2 ± 0,1732 (w/o); viscosity of 366,667 ± 33,350; emulsification time of 1,44 ± 0,098; particle size of 0,6039 ± 6,5871 μm; and polydispersity index of 0,7116 ± 0,1277. The formulation was considered physically stable based on hair tonic evaluation, but less stable based on microemulsion particle size and polydispersity index values. Conclusion: The combination of 20% Span 80, 30% Tween 80, and 20% PEG 400 produced a formula that met the physical evaluation criteria of a microemulsion combining virgin coconut oil and moringa seed oil in a hair tonic preparation. Recommendation: It is necessary to reduce the concentration lipophilic substances and add a certain amount of alcohol; Research on the effects of temperature and sonication in the formulation is also needed
