Abstract

Background: High-dose handbody lotion is a synthetic skin whitener not registered with the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) and may contain dangerous chemicals like hydroquinone. This substance can inhibit melanin production but has serious side effects. The BPOM prohibits its use in skin whitening products and only allows it in nail care products up to 0.02%. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the hydroquinone content in high-dose handbody lotions sold in online stores. Metodh: Samples were taken from various e-commerce platforms based on product licensing status (BPOM-registered and non-BPOM) and the level of consumer interest. This study employed a qualitative method through a color reaction test and a quantitative method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry analysis. Result: The results of the study showed that in the qualitative test using FeCl3 reagent and Benedict's reagent, two of the 10 samples tested were positive for containing hydroquinone, which was then carried out quantitatively using the UV-Vis spectrophotometry method on the two samples, the results were obtained with the levels of each sample, namely sample C (0.0314%) and sample H (0.0322%). Conclusion: Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that both samples do not comply with BPOM Regulation No. 23 of 2019 concerning the Technical Requirements for Cosmetic Ingredients. Recomendation: Based on the research findings, the public should be educated about the risks of illegal cosmetics containing harmful substances like hydroquinone without medical supervision. The government also needs to collaborate with e-commerce platforms to regulate the sale of cosmetic products that do not comply with existing regulations.
