Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a common oral health problem in early childhood and can affect their growth and development and quality of life. School-age children are very vulnerable to dental caries due to consumption of cariogenic foods, poor brushing habits, as well as environmental factors and the habit of drinking formula milk. Research Objective: To determine the factors associated with the incidence of dental caries in children at 'Aisyiyah Binorong Kindergarten, Banjarnegara. Research Methods: This study used quantitative methods with correlational analytic design and cross sectional approach. The number of respondents was 61 children, and data were collected through questionnaires. Results: Most children (75.4%) had dental caries. As many as 52.5% have a high habit of consuming cariogenic foods, 70.5% have poor brushing habits, and 82% consume formula milk without pacifiers. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between consumption of cariogenic foods (p = 0.003) and tooth brushing habits (p = 0.047) with the incidence of dental caries. However, there was no significant association between the habit of drinking formula milk with pacifiers and dental caries (p = 0.716). Recommendation: Future researchers are advised to examine the content of substances in cariogenic foods that are most often consumed by children, such as candy, sweet bread, and formula milk.
