Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder characterized by both positive symptoms (e.g., hallucinations, delusions) and negative symptoms (e.g., social withdrawal, reduced motivation). This condition not only affects mental health but also significantly impairs patients' cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Occupational therapy and structured socialization interventions have been widely recognized as effective approaches to enhance patients’ functional abilities, social skills, and independence. However, the implementation of comprehensive psychosocial rehabilitation programs remains limited in many healthcare settings in Indonesia. Objective: This study aims to implement a combination of session 7 of socialization therapy and occupational craft therapy to improve social and occupational skills among male psychotic patients in the Al Afiyat Ward at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: A descriptive case study approach was employed. The sample consisted of eight male schizophrenia patients aged between 26 and 48 years. Data collection tools included nursing care documentation forms, observation sheets, the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), and standardized operational procedures (SOPs) for innovative occupational craft therapy and session 7 of socialization therapy. Qualitative descriptive analysis was used to interpret the data, which were subsequently presented in tabular and narrative formats. Results: The results indicated that the combined therapeutic intervention contributed to a reduction in psychotic symptoms among most patients. The highest percentage decrease in BPRS scores was observed in subject K4 (29.8%). Improvements in social skills were most notable in subjects K1, K2, and K8 (40% increase). Regarding occupational skills, the most significant progress occurred in K1, K3, K5, K6, and K8 (66.7%). Verbal communication ability improved most markedly in K3 and K6 (100%), while non-verbal skills increased the most in K1, K4, and K6 (66.7%). Overall, the intervention appeared more effective for individuals with lower baseline scores. Conclusion: Healthcare institutions are encouraged to invest in adequate facilities and resources to support such therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, training for healthcare professionals should be prioritized to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of these evidence-based practices in clinical settings.
