Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney failure (CKF) is a non-communicable disease that requires long-term hemodialysis therapy. This condition not only causes physical complications but also affects patients' psychosocial well-being. Spirituality is believed to be an important coping strategy that can improve psychosocial adaptation in patients with chronic illnesses. Objective: To determine the relationship between spirituality and psychosocial adaptation among patients with chronic kidney failure (CKF) undergoing hemodialysis at RS PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design. A total of 83 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) and the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale - Self Report (PAIS-SR). Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test. Results: The research results showed that 60 respondents had a moderate level of spirituality (72.3%) and 49 respondents (59.0%) had good psychosocial adaptation. The bivariate analysis results showed r = 0.353 and p = 0.000, which means there is a significant and moderate positive relationship between spirituality and psychosocial adaptation in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between spirituality and psychosocial adaptation in patients with chronic kidney failure. Higher levels of spirituality are associated with better psychosocial adjustment. Recommendation: Health professionals, especially nurses, are encouraged to incorporate spiritual approaches in nursing interventions to enhance psychosocial adaptation among chronic kidney failure (CKF) patients. Involving the family in spiritual support during hemodialysis treatment is also recommended.
