Abstract

Background: Anxiety is an emotional response commonly experienced by patients prior to surgery with general anesthesia, potentially affecting both physiological and psychological well-being. Spirituality is considered a potential protective factor, reflecting an individual's capacity to find meaning, hope, and inner peace, which may help reduce anxiety. Objective: To examine the relationship between spiritual level and the level of anxiety in preoperative patients undergoing general anesthesia at PKU Amanah Sumpiuh Hospital. Methods: This study employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 40 respondents participated. The Daily Spiritual Experience Scale (DSES) was used to assess spirituality, and the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) was used to measure anxiety. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: Most respondents demonstrated a high level of spirituality and mild to moderate levels of anxiety. Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship between spirituality and anxiety, with a p-value of 0.000 and a correlation coefficient of r = -0.628. Conclusion: There is a strong and significant negative correlation between the level of spirituality and preoperative anxiety. Higher levels of spirituality are associated with lower levels of anxiety in patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia. Recommendation: Healthcare professionals are encouraged to integrate spiritual care approaches into preoperative services to help reduce patient anxiety.
