Abstract

Background: The complex and high-intensity environment of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) often contributes to elevated levels of anxiety among family members of patients. To address this issue, the implementation of a Family-Centered Care (FCC) approach is essential. Preliminary interviews conducted at Dr. Soedirman Hospital, Kebumen, revealed that 80% of family members experienced anxiety due to restricted visiting hours and fluctuations in the patient’s condition, while 70% expressed a preference for guaranteed healthcare services and close proximity to a comfortable waiting area. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the fulfillment of family needs and the anxiety levels experienced by family members of patients in the ICU at Dr. Soedirman Hospital, Kebumen. Methods: A correlational quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach was employed, involving 136 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included the Family Needs of Intensive Care Patients Questionnaire and the State Anxiety Inventory Form Y1. Data were analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. Results: The findings indicated a significant relationship between the need for service assurance (r = 0.207; p = 0.016) and proximity to the patient (r = 0.325; p = 0.000) with the level of anxiety among family members. However, no significant associations were found between anxiety levels and other family needs, such as information, comfort, and emotional support (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The identified association between the need for service assurance and proximity with family anxiety underscores the importance of integrating Family-Centered Care principles into nursing practice within ICU settings. Recommendations: Future research is encouraged to further explore external family needs using longitudinal or mixed-method designs to allow for continuous monitoring and a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.
