Abstract

Background: Pneumonia is a disease that occurs in the respiratory tract characterized by lung inflammation due to infection. The signs and symptoms experienced by individuals suffering from pneumonia include a productive cough and shortness of breath. One breathing technique that can be used for children with pneumonia is Pursed Lip Breathing, which aims to help the development of alveoli to promote secretion during expansion. Objective: Describing the outcomes of nursing care for ineffective airway clearance with the intervention of Pursed Lip Breathing (PLB) with the modification of balloon blowing in children with pneumonia in Aster Room at RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo. Methods: This research uses a descriptive method with a case study approach. The sample consists of 5 pediatric pneumonia patients. The case study instrument utilizes a modified SOP for pursed lip breathing therapy, which includes blowing balloons and observation sheets before and after therapy administration. Results: The application results conducted on the five patients showed that all experienced issues with ineffective airway clearance and were given non- pharmacological interventions of pursed lip breathing therapy twice in the morning and evening for 3x24 hours with a therapy duration of 5-10 minutes. They were then observed before and after therapy. After implementing this for 3x24 hours on the five patients, it was found that there was a decrease in respiratory rates in all five patients, reduced wheezing, increased sputum production, improved effective coughing, and decreased shortness of breath. Recommendation: The results of this study can be applied to patients with complaints of ineffective airways clearance in order to improve effective cough, shortness of breath, additional breath sounds such as rhonchi, increase sputum production, and normalize respiration through non-pharmacological methods
