Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a global health issue known as a silent killer due to its often asymptomatic nature. According to WHO (2023), approximately 1.28 billion adults worldwide suffer from hypertension, but only a small proportion are aware of and manage their condition. In Indonesia, the prevalence increased from 25.8% in 2013 to 34.1% in 2018. Sleep disturbance is a common problem among hypertensive patients, closely related to elevated blood pressure and reduced quality of life. Lightening therapy, a non-pharmacological intervention involving environmental light modification, is one potential solution to improve sleep quality. Main Objective: This study aims to describe the nursing care provided to patients with elevated blood pressure experiencing sleep disturbances through the implementation of lightening therapy. Methods: This research employed a descriptive qualitative case study approach involving five inpatients at RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo between January and March 2025. All patients had elevated blood pressure and reported sleep disturbances. Nursing interventions were conducted over three consecutive days, totaling 12 actions per patient. These included lighting adjustments, education on deep breathing relaxation techniques, and the establishment of regular sleep schedules. Evaluations were conducted using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Nursing Care Results: Following the interventions, all patients showed significant improvements, with PSQI scores decreasing from an average of 18.4 to 3.4, and sleep duration increasing from an average of 4.4 hours to 7.2 hours per day. These findings indicate that lightening therapy is effective in improving the sleep quality of hypertensive patients. Recommendation: Lightening therapy is recommended as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to enhance sleep quality in hypertensive patients, both in hospital settings and at home.
