Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a chronic condition that requires patients to undergo regular and long-term hemodialysis therapy, which may affect patients’ psychological conditions and quality of life. One of the psychological factors that plays an important role in the patient adaptation process is self-acceptance. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-acceptance and quality of life among chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 190 respondents selected using a simple random sampling technique. The research instruments were the Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS) to measure self-acceptance and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-36 (KDQOL-36) questionnaire to assess quality of life. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with Spearman’s rho test. Results: The results showed that most respondents had a moderate level of self-acceptance, with 132 respondents (69.47%), and a very good quality of life, with 175 respondents (92.10%). The Spearman’s rho test revealed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between self-acceptance and quality of life. Conclusion: Higher levels of self-acceptance are associated with better quality of life among chronic kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. Recommendation: It is recommended to develop educational programs and psychosocial support interventions focusing on enhancing patients’ self-acceptance to improve their quality of life during hemodialysis therapy.
