Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a highly prevalent non-communicable disease and a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity. Unhealthy dietary patterns, particularly excessive intake of sodium and saturated fats, play a substantial role in elevating blood pressure. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is widely recommended as an effective non-pharmacological intervention to reduce blood pressure by promoting higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products while limiting sodium intake. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the DASH diet in reducing blood pressure among patients with hypertension in the service area of Petanahan Primary Health Center. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a control group design was conducted. The sample consisted of 74 respondents selected through total sampling and equally divided into an intervention group (n = 37) and a control group (n = 37). Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention. The intervention group received education and implemented a DASH diet menu for five days, while the control group received only information regarding the schedule and menu without dietary implementation. Data were analyzed using a dependent t-test. Results: The DASH diet was shown to be effective in reducing blood pressure among patients with hypertension, as indicated by p-values < 0.01 for both systolic and diastolic measurements. In contrast, the control group did not demonstrate significant changes in blood pressure. Conclusion: The DASH diet is effective in lowering blood pressure among patients with hypertension in the Petanahan Primary Health Center service area. Recommendations: Future studies are recommended to extend the duration of the intervention, include monitoring of dietary adherence, and consider additional variables such as physical activity, stress levels, and antihypertensive medication use to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of blood pressure control.
