Abstract
Background Cataracts are a degenerative condition that cause cloudiness in the eye lens and reduced vision, potentially leading to blindness. Treatment involves surgery, but patients often experience anxiety, especially if it's their first operation. Anxiety is an emotional condition characterized by vague and inappropriate fears. Progressive muscle relaxation, which involves stretching and relaxing specific muscle groups, can help reduce anxiety and make patients feel calmer before surgery. Objective Describing and Explaining Nursing Care for Anxiety in Cataract Patients Undergoing Surgery. Methods This final project uses a case study method, which is an in-depth investigation of a specific situation with conclusions limited to that particular context. Nursing Care Outcomes Nursing innovation was implemented to address anxiety in cataract patients undergoing surgery by applying progressive muscle relaxation. Before the progressive muscle relaxation was given, there were 4 patients with moderate anxiety and 1 patient with mild anxiety. After undergoing progressive muscle relaxation, 4 patients experienced a reduction in anxiety to mild levels, and 1 patient no longer felt anxious. Conclusion Progressive muscle relaxation can reduce anxiety levels in cataract patients undergoing surgery. Recommendation It is hoped that hospitals can introduce progressive muscle relaxation to patients through healthcare providers as an effective method for reducing anxiety levels, particularly for cataract patients undergoing surgery.
