Abstract

Background:Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder with a high and steadily increasing prevalence in Indonesia, including Central Java and the Kebumen region. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors—such as excessive sugar consumption, insufficient physical activity, smoking, and prolonged psychological stress—are widely recognized as major contributors to poor glycemic control. A preliminary assessment conducted at the Puring Primary Health Center revealed an increase in the number of registered diabetes mellitus patients from 482 cases in 2023 to 519 cases in 2024. Most patients were women, and unhealthy lifestyle patterns were identified as a dominant contributing factor. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the relationship between lifestyle behaviors and blood glucose levels among patients with diabetes mellitus enrolled in the Prolanis program at the Puring Primary Health Center, as well as to describe the demographic characteristics of the respondents. Methods: A descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 52 respondents selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a structured lifestyle questionnaire covering dietary habits, physical activity, smoking behavior, and stress levels. Blood glucose levels were measured using a glucometer. Data analysis included univariate analysis and bivariate analysis using Spearman’s rho correlation test, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Results: Most respondents were aged 61–70 years (50%), female (88.5%), had elementary- level education (34.6%), worked as housewives (34.6%), and had been living with diabetes for 5–10 years (57.7%). More than half of the respondents demonstrated poor lifestyle behaviors (55.8%) and had hyperglycemic blood glucose levels (53.8%). Spearman’s rho analysis showed a strong positive correlation between lifestyle and blood glucose levels (r = 0.695; p < 0.001). Conclusion: Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors are significantly associated with elevated blood glucose levels among patients with diabetes mellitus. These findings highlight the need for lifestyle-focused interventions to improve glycemic control and prevent diabetes-related complications.
