Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease known as the silent killer or a disease that appears without showing any symptoms. Hypertension is a health disorder with a high prevalence in the elderly population. Efforts to control hypertension include pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. One non-pharmacological therapy is the alternate nostril breathing technique. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of alternate nostril breathing therapy in lowering blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients at the Rowokele Public Health Center. Methods: The study used a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 25 respondents who were elderly people with hypertension, selected using total sampling. The instrument used was a blood pressure observation sheet. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: Systolic blood pressure before intervention was 158.48 mmHg and became 136.96 mmHg after intervention (p<0.001). Meanwhile, diastolic blood pressure before intervention was 101.04 mmHg and became 83.16 mmHg after intervention (p<0.001). Conclusion: Alternate nostril breathing therapy is effective in lowering blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients. Recommendation: Alternate nostril breathing therapy is recommended as an alternative non-pharmacological treatment for elderly hypertensive patients. Future researchers are encouraged to use a control group as a comparison and to control for confounding factors that may affect blood pressure.
