Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a chronic condition and a major public health concern, as it often remains asymptomatic while carrying a high risk of serious complications. One of the factors contributing to poor blood pressure control is insufficient physical activity. Effective hypertension management therefore requires not only pharmacological treatment but also non-pharmacological approaches, including structured physical exercise such as low-impact aerobic exercise. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of low-impact aerobic exercise on changes in blood pressure among patients with hypertension in the service area of Rowokele Primary Health Center. Methods: A pre-experimental study using a pretest–posttest design with a control group was conducted. The sample consisted of 30 patients with hypertension selected through total sampling. The low-impact aerobic exercise intervention was carried out over a two-week period with four exercise sessions. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The results showed a significant reduction in blood pressure following the low-impact aerobic exercise intervention. The mean systolic blood pressure decreased from 146.2 mmHg to 134.1 mmHg, while the mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 92.7 mmHg to 84.7 mmHg. Wilcoxon test results indicated a statistically significant difference between pre-intervention and post-intervention blood pressure values (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Low-impact aerobic exercise has a significant effect on lowering blood pressure among patients with hypertension and may be considered an effective complementary non-pharmacological therapy in hypertension management. Recommendations: Future studies are recommended to conduct the intervention across multiple locations closer to participants’ residences to improve participation and generalizability.
