Abstract
Background: Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants are defined as babies born with a weight of less than 2500 grams. These infants are at risk of hypothermia due to immature thermoregulatory function caused by underdeveloped physiological systems and relatively small body size. Hypothermia is characterized by a body temperature below 36.5°C. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a method involving direct skin-to-skin contact between the mother and infant, where the mother’s body provides natural warmth to help stabilize the infant’s temperature. Objective: To analyze nursing care for LBW infants with hypothermia using Kangaroo Mother Care and to identify changes in body temperature before and after its implementation in the Amanah Ward of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Method: This study used a descriptive case study design with a five-step nursing process involving five LBW infants experiencing hypothermia. KMC was administered for three consecutive days, twice daily, with each session lasting two hours. Data were collected using nursing care documentation forms, KMC standard operating procedures, thermometers, kangaroo bags, baby hats and socks, and observation sheets. Results: All infants had body temperatures below 36.5°C, cold extremities, and thin subcutaneous tissue. After six sessions of KMC, all infants showed increased body temperature within the normal range of 36.5°C–37.5°C. Conclusion: Kangaroo Mother Care effectively increases body temperature by up to 1°C in LBW infants with hypothermia and supports nursing care practice.
