Abstract
Background : Low birth weight (LBW) infants remain a major health problem, contributing significantly to neonatal mortality. One common complication in low birth weight infants is hypothermia due to immaturity of the thermoregulatory system and minimal subcutaneous fat. Limited facilities, such as incubators, necessitate the development of simple, effective, and safe nursing interventions, one of which is the nesting technique. Objective: To analyze the implementation of nursing care for low birth weight infants with hypothermia through nesting innovation in the Melati Room, PROF. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto Hospital. Method: This study used a descriptive design with a case study approach on five low birth weight infants who were hospitalized for at least three days. Result : Nesting intervention was given for two hours per day for three days, with measurements of body temperature, pulse rate, and respiratory rate before and after the intervention. The results showed an increase in body temperature to reach the normal range (36.5–37.5°C), warm extremities, and stabilization of pulse and respiratory rates in all patients. The nursing problem of hypothermia was declared resolved after the implementation of nesting. Conclusion : The nesting technique is effective as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention in managing hypothermia in LBW infants.
