Abstract

Background: Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is a leading cause of morbidity in children due to their immature immune systems. A common problem is ineffective airway clearance, characterized by ineffective coughing, increased secretions, rhonchi, and altered respiratory rate. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be applied is eucalyptus aromatherapy inhalation therapy, which has mucolytic and bronchodilatory effects. Objective: To describe the clinical response of children with ARI to eucalyptus aromatherapy inhalation therapy at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study used a descriptive case study design with a nursing process approach, including assessment, diagnosis, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The subjects consisted of five children aged 3–6 years diagnosed with mild to moderate ARI and experiencing ineffective airway clearance. Eucalyptus aromatherapy inhalation therapy was administered for three consecutive days, twice daily, with a duration of 10–15 minutes. Evaluation parameters included additional breath sounds, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, sputum production, and effective coughing ability. Results: The nursing care results showed a reduction in signs and symptoms of ineffective airway clearance after the intervention, indicated by decreased rhonchi, reduced respiratory rate, normalized oxygen saturation, easier sputum expectoration, and more effective coughing. Eucalyptus aromatherapy inhalation therapy has potential as a supportive intervention in improving airway clearance in children with ARI. Recommendation: Future research is recommended to examine the effectiveness of combining eucalyptus aromatherapy inhalation therapy with effective coughing exercises in children with ARI to address ineffective airway clearance.
