Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease and remains one of the leading global health challenges, including in Indonesia. Poorly controlled blood pressure can lead to serious complications, one of the most critical being stroke. Stroke is a major cause of mortality and long-term disability; however, its occurrence can be substantially reduced through effective hypertension control and improved patient knowledge regarding complication prevention. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the level of knowledge and stroke prevention behaviors among patients with hypertension in the service area of Sempor II Primary Health Center. Methods: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 103 respondents diagnosed with hypertension. Participants were selected using total sampling. Data were collected using validated and reliable questionnaires assessing knowledge of stroke prevention and stroke prevention behaviors. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: The findings indicated that most respondents had a good level of knowledge regarding stroke prevention (86.4%) and demonstrated good stroke prevention behaviors (81.6%). Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between knowledge level and stroke prevention behavior (p = 0.000; p < 0.05) among patients with hypertension in the Sempor II Primary Health Center service area. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between patients’ knowledge of stroke prevention and their preventive behaviors among individuals with hypertension in the Sempor II Primary Health Center service area. Recommendations: Future studies are encouraged to explore additional factors, such as family support, medication adherence, and physical activity, that may influence stroke prevention behaviors. Furthermore, the development of engaging and innovative educational media is recommended to enhance public awareness and promote sustained behavioral change.
