Abstract

Background, Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease commonly experienced by adults and elderly populations and is characterized by pain as the primary complaint, which may reduce patients’ quality of life. Pain management in osteoarthritis patients generally involves the use of analgesic medications that can be obtained either through a physician’s prescription or through self-medication at pharmacies. Rational use of analgesics includes appropriate drug selection, correct dosage, proper frequency, and duration of use according to the patient’s condition. However, in pharmaceutical practice at Semeru Medika Farma Pharmacy, Lumajang, some osteoarthritis patients were found to consume analgesics irregularly, use inappropriate dosages, or take medications without supervision from healthcare professionals. These practices may lead to suboptimal pain control and increase the risk of adverse drug effects. Research Objective, the objective of this study was to determine the relationship between analgesic consumption patterns and pain intensity among patients with osteoarthritis at a Semeru Medika Farma pharmacy in Lumajang. Research Method, this study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 30 osteoarthritis patients were selected using purposive sampling. Data on analgesic consumption patterns were collected using a structured questionnaire, while pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using Kendall’s tau test. Research Results, The results showed that the majority of respondents had a good category of analgesic consumption pattern (63.3%), characterized by rational use of analgesics, appropriate dosage, and adherence to healthcare professionals’ recommendations. Most respondents also experienced mild pain levels (63.3%). Statistical analysis indicated a significant relationship between analgesic consumption patterns and pain levels (p-value = 0.018). Conclusion, this study concludes that better analgesic consumption patterns are associated with lower pain intensity in osteoarthritis patients. Recommendation, pharmacists are encouraged to enhance patient education regarding the rational use of analgesics.
