Abstract

Background: Self-medication practices in Indonesia reach 86.15% with Kebumen Regency recording 6.5% skin disease incidence. Rice farmers in Adimulyo are vulnerable to skin diseases due to pesticide exposure but often practice self-medication without adequate understanding. Objective: To analyze the relationship between community knowledge about self-medication and the use of skin disease medications at Bunda Farma Pharmacy, Adimulyo, Kebumen. Methods: Quantitative research with cross-sectional design involving 86 respondents using accidental sampling. Data were collected through validated questionnaires and analyzed using Spearman Rank test. Results: Respondent characteristics were dominated by males (55.8%), aged 36-45 years (31.4%), high school education (44.2%), and farmers (48.8%). Knowledge level about skin diseases was moderate (72,08%%) with 48,8% having moderate knowledge, 32,6% good, and 18.6% poor. Medication use level was moderate (82,3%) with 87,2% good category, 11,6% moderate, and 1,2% poor. Spearman Rank test showed a significant positive relationship between knowledge and medication use (r=0.231; p=0.032<0.05) with weak correlation strength. Conclusion: There is a significant but weak positive relationship between community knowledge about self-medication and the use of skin disease medications, indicating that knowledge is only one factor influencing self-medication practices. Recommendations: Structured health education programs, enhanced pharmacist counseling roles, and cross-sectoral collaboration are needed to improve rational medication use among farming communities.
