Abstract
Background: Hypertension is a chronic disease that is often accompanied by headache due to increased blood pressure. Uncontrolled pain can reduce patient comfort and quality of life. In addition to pharmacological therapy, non-pharmacological nursing interventions are needed that are safe and effective. One of these interventions is Slow Stroke Back Massage (SSBM), which can help reduce pain intensity through relaxation effects. Aim: To describe nursing care with the application of Slow Stroke Back Massage relaxation therapy in reducing pain intensity in patients with hypertension at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Method: This Final Nursing Scientific Project used a case study design with a nursing care approach. The subjects consisted of five patients with a medical diagnosis of hypertension and the main nursing problem of acute pain. Data were collected through assessment, observation, and nursing documentation. Slow Stroke Back Massage therapy was administered for 3x24 hours, and pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Results: The application of Slow Stroke Back Massage relaxation therapy showed a decrease in pain intensity in all patients. The pain scale before the intervention was at scale 6 (moderate pain) and gradually decreased to scale 3 after the therapy was administered for 3x24 hours. Patients appeared more relaxed, comfortable, and showed reduced pain expressions. Conclusion: Slow Stroke Back Massage relaxation therapy is effective in reducing pain intensity in patients with hypertension and can be used as a supportive non-pharmacological nursing intervention in pain management. Recommendation: The innovation in providing the Slow Stroke Back Massage (SSBM) therapy showed that this innovation is effective in reducing pain intensity in patients with hypertension.
