Abstract

Background: Thalassemia is a chronic blood disease that requires long-term treatment and can affect the psychological development of children, including their self-concept. A positive self-concept is essential in supporting the social and emotional adaptation of children with thalassemia. Research Objective: This study aims to determine the self-concept of school-age children with thalassemia at Melati Ward, Dr. Soedirman Kebumen Hospital. Research Method: The research approach used was descriptive quantitative. The sample consisted of 44 respondents selected through total sampling. Data collection was conducted using a validated and reliable questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using univariate analysis to describe each aspect of self-concept: self-image, ideal self, self-esteem, role performance, and identity. Research Results: The results showed that the majority of children had a positive self-image (65.9%), positive ideal self (100%), but negative self-esteem (54.5%), negative role performance (56.8%), and negative identity (36.4%). Overall, most children have a positive self-concept (63.6%), although some aspects such as self-esteem and role performance remain low. Conclusion: Most school-age children with thalassemia at Melati Ward, Dr. Soedirman Kebumen Hospital have a positive self-concept, but certain aspects such as self-esteem and role performance are still negatively affected and require further nursing intervention. Recommendation: There needs to be nursing interventions focused on improving self-esteem and role performance through holistic approaches, family support, and therapeutic activities to enhance the self-concept of children with thalassemia.
