Abstract

Muscle pain is a common condition experienced by many people due to excessive physical activity, fatigue, and aging. The long-term use of chemical analgesics may cause adverse effects; therefore, safer alternative therapies are needed, one of which is the use of herbal-based treatments. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate a herbal massage oil based on brotowali (Tinospora crispa L.) combined with white ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) and kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) for topical treatment of muscle pain. This research was a non-experimental laboratory study using a low-heat infusion method at a temperature of 60–70°C for 60 minutes. The materials used included brotowali, white ginger, kencur, coconut oil as the base, and menthol as an additional ingredient. The resulting product was evaluated for safety through a simple skin irritation test (patch test) and pH measurement. The results showed that the herbal massage oil formulation was successfully prepared with stable characteristics, natural aroma, and good skin absorption. The irritation test on volunteers showed no adverse reactions such as redness, itching, or swelling. The pH value of the preparation was within the physiological skin range (±4.5–6.5), indicating its suitability for topical application. The phytochemical content of the active ingredients is expected to provide analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. In conclusion, the brotowali-based herbal massage oil formulated using the low-heat infusion method is safe for topical use in relieving muscle pain and has the potential to be further developed as an effective herbal product.
