Abstract

The background of this study is the high prevalence of postpartum blues, a common emotional disturbance experienced by postpartum mothers, characterized by anxiety, mood swings, sadness, and sleep disturbances. If not properly managed, this condition may escalate into postpartum depression, negatively impacting maternal mental health and infant care. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of combining bergamot essential oil aromatherapy and Qur'anic murottal in preventing postpartum blues. The method used in this study was a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design involving 44 postpartum mothers selected through purposive sampling at the Pejagoan Branch of the Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI). The intervention consisted of daily bergamot oil inhalation and listening to Qur'anic murottal. Psychological conditions were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) before and after the intervention, and data were analyzed using a paired t-test. The results of this study showed that the mean EPDS score significantly decreased from 5.20 to 3.14 after the intervention (p<0.001), indicating a meaningful reduction in postpartum blues symptoms. The conclusion of this study is that the combination of bergamot aromatherapy and Qur'anic murottal is a safe and effective non-pharmacological intervention for reducing postpartum blues. The recommendation for future research is to apply this intervention in broader populations and compare its effectiveness with other non-pharmacological therapies.
