Abstract

Background: Impaired physical mobility is a common issue in patients with non-hemorrhagic stroke, affecting independence and quality of life. Physical rehabilitation through non-pharmacological interventions such as rubber ball squeezing therapy is considered potential to improve upper extremity muscle strength. Objective: To describe the implementation of nursing care with rubber ball squeezing therapy intervention in non-hemorrhagic stroke patients with impaired physical mobility. Methods: A descriptive case study involving five non-hemorrhagic stroke patients at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Hospital Purwokerto. The intervention was conducted for three days with guided rubber ball squeezing exercises. Muscle strength was measured using the Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) scale before and after the intervention. Results: Before the intervention, patients' upper extremity muscle strength scores ranged from 1–3. After three days of intervention, four out of five patients showed an increase in muscle strength score by 1 point in the upper extremities. One patient showed no change. Patients also reported improved ability to perform basic movements such as grasping and lifting the hand. Conclusion: Rubber ball squeezing therapy can improve upper extremity muscle strength in non-hemorrhagic stroke patients with impaired physical mobility. Recommendations: Nurses are advised to integrate rubber ball squeezing therapy into stroke rehabilitation nursing care. Hospitals can provide this simple therapy tool as part of early mobilization programs.
