Abstract

Background : Anxiety is a normal emotional symptom that is commonly experienced. Adolescents who experience symptoms of anxiety often face issues such as fatigue, fear, restlessness, and health problems including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and frequent urination. Persistent anxiety can interfere with daily activities and emotional well-being. One non-pharmacological approach to help reduce anxiety in adolescents facing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Objective : To determine the level of anxiety in female adolescents before and after the intervention and to identify the effect of progressive muscle relaxation therapy in reducing anxiety in adolescents facing premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Methods : This study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. Purposive sampling was used to select physically and mentally healthy female students who had not yet menstruated based on specific criteria. A total of 71 female adolescents were sampled. Anxiety levels were measured using the HARS anxiety questionnaire, with a validity score of 0.93 and a reliability score of 0.97. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon test. Results : There is an effect of progressive muscle relaxation on adolescents with PMS after the intervention, with 33.8% experiencing mild anxiety and 66.2% experiencing moderate anxiety. A bivariate test using the Wilcoxon test showed a significance value of 0.001 (<0.05), indicating that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, thus confirming a significant effect. Conclusion : Progressive muscle relaxation therapy is proven to be effective in reducing anxiety in adolescents facing PMS. Recommendations : For further researchers are encouraged to expand the respondent categories and explore other types of relaxation therapies.
