Abstract

Background: A mediastinal tumor is an abnormal mass that develops within the mediastinal cavity and may compress vital organs such as the trachea, bronchi, and major blood vessels. This condition frequently causes respiratory disturbances characterized by an ineffective breathing pattern, requiring comprehensive management and nursing care. Objective: To describe the implementation of nursing care for a patient with a mediastinal tumor experiencing an ineffective breathing pattern in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of RSUD Prof. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto. Methods: This study employed a case study approach using the nursing process, including assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The main nursing interventions included airway management, suctioning, oxygen administration, respiratory status monitoring, and pursed-lip breathing exercises. Results: After three days of nursing care, the patient's respiratory status improved, as evidenced by reduced dyspnea, decreased use of accessory respiratory muscles, increased oxygen saturation from 90% to 94%, and an improvement in respiratory rate from 42 breaths per minute to 29 breaths per minute. The nursing problem of ineffective breathing pattern was partially resolved, and the patient's condition showed positive progress. Recommendation: Nurses should optimize airway management, conduct continuous respiratory monitoring, and implement non-pharmacological therapies such as pursed-lip breathing as supportive interventions. Multidisciplinary collaboration is also necessary to improve the quality of nursing care and prevent complications in patients with mediastinal tumors.
