Abstract

Background: COPD is the world's third most lethal illness, accounting for 3.32 million deaths in 2019. One of the COPD issues that must be addressed is the patient's quality of life. Shortness of breath and continuous coughing have an impact on COPD patients' quality of life, which can lead to anxiety. COPD combined with anxiety can worsen the prognosis and increase the decline in quality of life and death. Objective : To investigate the association between anxiety and quality of life in COPD patients. Methods : This form of research is quantitative. The research instrument included the HARS (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale) with numbers and the SGRQ (St. George Respiratory Questionnaire) with numbers. The total number of participants was 61 respondents. The data was processed with SPSS and analyzed using the Chi-squared test. Result : Almost as many as 23 respondents (30.7%) reported having moderate anxiety, 29 respondents (47.5%) reported having a poor quality of life, and 15 respondents (24.6%) reported having a poor quality of life, which was the majority of COPD patients. Conclusion : With a Chi-Square test result of 0.015 (p value <0.05), there was a correlation between anxiety and the quality of life of patients with COPD. Recomendation : Amanah Sumpiuh Hospital may improve its treatment programs for persons with respiratory illnesses who experience anxiety, particularly COPD.
