Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus can affect adolescents who live an unhealthy lifestyle and behavior. The increasing number of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in adolescents requires early prevention education to minimize cases of Diabetes Mellitus. One of the methods that can be used is the focus group discussion method. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of education through focus group discussion on knowledge about the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adolescents at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Kebumen. Method: This study uses a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test. The respondents used were 51 people with proportionate stratified random sampling. The instrument used was a type 2 diabetes mellitus prevention knowledge questionnaire with 15 items. The analysis uses the Wilcoxon test. Result: The results of the study showed that there was an influence of education through focus group discussion on knowledge about the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adolescents (p=0.000). Conclusion: Education on the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus using the focus group discussion method is effective in increasing adolescent knowledge. Recommendation: The next researcher is expected to research education in adolescents by comparing the focus group discussion education method with other methods
