Abstract
Background: Lack of iron and folic acid in the diet can commonly cause anemia of pregnant mothers. The need for iron and folic acid increases during pregnancy, especially in the last trimester. Beet juice (beta vulgaris) is a kind of non-pharmacological alternative food source containing iron and folic acid which can increase blood cell production to prevent anemia of pregnant mothers. Objective: To find out the effectiveness of beet juice in increasing Hemoglobin (Hb) of pregnant mothers with anemia in their third trimester pregnancy. Method: This study is a qualitative descriptive with a case study approach. The participants were 3 pregnant mothers in trimester III who met the inclusion criteria. The instrument used was observation sheet. Data were obtained from interview, observation, and documentation. Result: After having beet juice, there was an increase in the Hemoglobin (Hb) of all participants – from 8.0gr% became 12.5gr% (participant 1), from 8.2gr% became 13.0gr% (participant 2), and from 7.3gr% became 11.5gr% (participant 3). Conclusion: The application of beet juice is effective to increase the Hemoglobin (Hb) of pregnant mothers with anemia in their third trimester pregnancy.
