Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a disease that causes an increase in blood glucose levels, which can lead to several consequences. According to IDF (International Diabetes Federation) data 6.7 million individuals died as a result of diabetes complications. Self-management efforts can be made to lower the incidence of complications in diabetes mellitus. Spirituality is one of the aspects that can influence self-management. Purpose: To identified the relationship between spirituality and self-management. Method: This is a correlation study using a cross-sectional technique. A spirituality questionnaire and the DSMQ (Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire) were utilized as research instruments. There were 60 persons participated in the study and Kendall Tau test was used to analized the data. Result: The results revealed that the respondents' spiritual level was mostly high, as many as 48 individuals (80%), and their self-management value was mostly high, as many as 53 people (88.3%). Kendall Tau analysis test findings with ( = 0.05) obtained p value = 0.000; r = 0.597, indicating a link between spirituality and selfmanagement. Conclusion: Spirituality can assist persons with diabetes mellitus deal with challenges throughout sickness, accepting their situation, making decisions in their lives, and choosing a adaptive coping strategies. Recommendation: Future researchers should use triangulation to investigate the experience of spirituality with self-management to learn more about the relationship between spirituality and self-management.
