Abstract

Background: Stress is a non-specific body reaction to demands that affect universal phenomena in everyday life and cannot be avoided. High stress levels can make blood sugar difficult to control, which can lead to various complications. Objective: To determine the relationship between stress levels and blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong. Method: A quantitative descriptive correlation study with a cross-sectional approach was applied in this study. The total sampling technique selected 57 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus as respondents. Respondents’ data were collected starting in May 2023 using the Depression Anxiety Stress Questionnaire (DASS), and then those were analyzed by Spearman Rank. Results: The results of the study showed that the average age of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients was 56–65 years (43.9%), the gender of the majority was female (68.4%), the average junior high school education was 35.1%, the average job did not work (73.7%), the average stress level of type 2 diabetes mellitus was severe (64.9%), and the majority of blood sugar levels were bad (73.7%). The results of the Sperman rank test obtained a significant value of p = 0.008 (<0.05), thus the results of Ha data analysis are accepted, meaning that there was a relationship between stress levels and blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong. Conclusion: There was a relationship between stress levels and blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Recommendation: It is hoped that further study can explore what kinds of eefforts are made to prevent or reduce stress levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
