Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is a biological ailment characterized by uncontrolled cell division and maturation in breast tissue. It stands as the fifth leading cause of death globally, with breast cancer ranking as the most prevalent cancer type in Indonesia. Objective: To uncover the factors associated with the occurrence of breast cancer among outpatients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study was a descriptive correlational research design with a crosssectional approach. This research was conducted within the Outpatient Chemotherapy Polyclinic of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. The study population consisted of all patients diagnosed with breast cancer by medical professionals, amounting to 156 individuals. The sample size comprised 108 respondents, selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument employed was a questionnaire, and the data were subjected to both descriptive and correlational analysis. Results: The chi-square test yielded the following results: age (p = 0.009, <α 0.05); age at first menstruation (menarche) (p = 0.007, <α 0.05); breastfeeding history (p = 0.383, >α 0.05); length of contraceptive use (p = 0.001, <α 0.05); and family history (p = 0.001, <α 0.05). Conclusions: There was a connection between age; age at menarche; duration of contraceptive use; and family history with the occurrence of breast cancer among outpatients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Recommendation: Future researchers are encouraged to explore additional factors that may influence breast cancer incidence, expand the sample size to ensure a broader representation, and encompass a wider geographical scope to enhance research accuracy.
