Abstract

Research background : When individuals move to a new environment, they may feel uncomfortable and lonely, missing the affection and comfort they usually got from their old environment. However, if the new environment is able to replace these things and make the individual feel accepted, the level of homesickness can be reduced. Homesickness is a negative feeling or sadness that arises when someone has to be separated from someone they love. Meanwhile, a sense of belonging is an encouragement that encourages individuals to establish positive relationships with other people and feel accepted. Therefore, a sense of belonging plays an important role in reducing the level of homesickness. Purpose : Research was conducted to determine the relationship between sense of belonging and homesickness in Indonesian nurses who work as care givers in Japan with a working period of less than 1 year. Methods : This research uses descriptive quantitative research methods. Determination of research subjects was carried out using a purpousive sampling method, namely 49 Indonesian nurses who worked as care givers in Japan. This research instrument uses the Developing a Measure of Sense of Belonging (SOBI) questionnaire which has been translated into Indonesian by Cahyanti (2020), and the Homesickness Questionnaire which has been translated into Indonesian by Arilindie (2019), and then adapted by the researcher for setting of Indonesian nurses working in Japan with reliability values of 0.922 and 0.842 respectively. Result : There were 0 respondents with a very bad level of sense of belonging, 14 people with a very bad level with a percentage of 28.6%, 31 people with a good percentage with a percentage of 63.3%, and very good with 4 people with a percentage of 8.2%. respondents with a very low level of homesickness were 29 people with a percentage of 59.2%, low were 3 people with a percentage of 6.1%, medium were 6 people with a percentage of 12.2%, high were 11 people with a percentage of 22.4%, and while very high levels of homesickness do not exist. Conclusion : The results obtained were pvalue = 0.000, which means that there is a significant negative relationship between sense of belonging and homesickness in Indonesian nurses who work as care givers in Japan with a working period of less than 1 year. The higher the level of the respondent's sense of belonging, the lower the respondent's level of homesickness. Recommendation : It is hoped that it will become a reading source and basic literature for students regarding sense of belonging and homesickness
