Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by increased blood sugar (glucose) levels in the blood. One lifestyle factor that can increase the risk of developing DM is stress. Stress is the body's response to various factors that can threaten or harm. Stress can cause various physiological changes, including increased levels of the hormone cortisol. The hormone cortisol can increase blood sugar levels by inhibiting insulin action. Insulin is a hormone that functions to transport glucose from the blood into cells. Glucose that is not transported by insulin will remain in the blood and can cause an increase in blood sugar levels. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between stress levels and blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus sufferers at RSU PKU Muhammadiyah Kutowinangun. Method: This research uses a correlational analytical design with a cross sectional approach. The measuring instrument used to measure stress is The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). Blood sugar levels are known through examination results in mg/dl units. Data were analyzed descriptively and correlatively using the Kendal tau correlation test. Results: The stress level in diabetes mellitus sufferers was in the moderate category with an average score of 23. Blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus sufferers were GDS 212- 263. There is a relationship between stress levels and blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus sufferers at RSU PKU Muhammadiyah Kutowinangun (p=0.020). The more severe the level of stress experienced by diabetes mellitus sufferers, the higher their blood sugar levels Recommendation: Propose the development of a standardized protocol in nursing practice that includes routine screening for stress levels and appropriate interventions as part of holistic diabetes management.
