Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. These high blood sugar levels can be influenced by internal factors, such as genetics, as well as external factors including age, obesity, dietary habits, medication adherence, and physical activity. Purpose: To identify the internal and external factors associated with blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus at the Poncowarno Community Health Center. Method: A quantitative research design was employed using a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 78 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from the Poncowarno Health Center, selected from August to October 2023 using a total sampling technique. The research instrument utilized a questionnaire, and analysis was conducted using Spearman’s rank correlation. Results: The findings of this study indicated significant relationships between blood sugar levels and the following factors: heredity (p = 0.004), age (p = 0.000), obesity (p = 0.028), diet (p = 0.000), medication adherence (p = 0.010), and physical activity (p = 0.000). Conclusion: The internal and external factors related to blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus include heredity, age, obesity, diet, medication adherence, and physical activity. Recommendation: Future researchers are encouraged to explore additional factors that may be associated with blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
