Abstract
Background: UNICEF data in 2015 in Indonesia there were 40% cases of violence and increased to 41-50% in school children aged 13-15 years in 2016. Factors that can affect bullying such as the social environment, peer groups, family, or parenting style applied by parents. The results of a preliminary study conducted by researchers at SMP Negeri 34 Purworejo found several cases of bullying. Bullying that often occurs at school is in the form of verbal behavior, such as students often insulting, threatening or physical, such as fighting, hitting, scratching. According to information, the majority of those who commit bullying are boys. In addition, students who are involved in this bullying behavior are students who live not with their parents and many students also come from broken home families. Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between parental parenting and the incidence of bullying of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 34 Purworejo. Methods: Quantitative design with cross sectional approach, the number of samples 66 was taken by cluster random sampling. Results: The results in this study obtained a value (p < 0.001), which means that there is a significant relationship between parental parenting and incidence of bullying of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 34 Purworejo. Conclusion: The majority of the parenting style applied by parents of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 34 Purworejo was out of 66 research respondents, there were 44 respondents with democratic parenting style with a lower level of bullying behavior of 78.5%. Recommendation: This democratic parenting style can be applied by parents in educating and raising children because this parenting style encourages openness, two-way communication, and respect for children's opinions so that it will form a more empathetic character and minimize the occurrence of bullying.
