Abstract

Background: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection physically or psychologically unpleasant symptoms that occur about one or two weeks before menstruation and will subside when menstruation begins. PMS was found to be associated with sleep quality, possible discomfort and high psychiatric mordibity during PMS. Objectives: To determine the correlation between premenstrual syndrome and sleep quality of bachelor nursing students at Muhammadiyah Health Science Institute of Gombong. Methods: This study used observational analytical method with cross sectional approach. The samples were 80 female students taken by proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The data obtained were tested by the SPSS for Windows program using Kendall's Tau analysis. Results: The majority of respondents experienced moderate premenstrual syndrome (57.5%) and had poor sleep quality (51.3%). Kendall's Tau test analysis obtained a significance value (p) of 0.014. Conclusion: It was concluded that (p<0.05) showing that there was a significant correlation between premenstrual syndrome and sleep quality of bachelor nursing students at Muhammadiyah Health Science Institute of Gombong.
