Abstract

Background: LBW does not have adequate drinking ability. The inability to drink in LBW is caused by weak sucking muscle ability, unstable oral ability, and causes related to neurological disorders on the effectiveness of sucking, swallowing, and breathing reflexes in LBW influenced by maturity of the structure of the brain and cranial nerves. These various reasons serve as a reference for providing early intervention to improve oral feeding ability by stimulating sucking ability in LBW. Perioral (outer mouth) and intraoral (internal structure) stimulation programs are one of the interventions used to improve sucking ability in LBW infants. Objective: Explaining nursing care about giving oral stimulus therapy to LBW with ineffective nursing problems for infants. Methods: This study used a descriptive method by analyzing oral stimulation or oral feeding in low birth weight infants with ineffective breastfeeding. The results of nursing care: The results of the analysis of nursing action innovations (before and after) on the five clients managed with oral stimulation therapy in LBW experienced an increase in the sucking and swallowing reflex of strong patients, patient weight, patient intake. Recommendation: The results of this study can be applied as oral stimulation therapy in LBW who experience symptoms of weak sucking and swallowing reflexes.
