Abstract

Background: Chronic renal failure (CKD) is a progressive and slow progression of kidney failure, usually lasting for one year. From some patients who experience CKD, it is found that they feel shortness of breath or dyspnea. The innovative intervention carried out was to apply pursed lips breathing and peppermint aromatherapy to reduce shortness of breath and provide comfort for CKD patients. Objective: To explain nursing care by giving pursed lips breathing techniques and peppermint aromatherapy for chronic kidney failure patients with nursing problems with ineffective breathing patterns in the ICU of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This final scientific paper uses a case study approach with a descriptive method. The instruments used are observation sheets and clock seconds. Subjects consisted of 5 patients with chronic renal failure with the main problem of ineffective breathing patterns. The results of the analysis: the nursing problem taken by the author is the ineffective breathing pattern. After nursing actions for 3 x 24 hours in the ICU of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital, it was found that the administration of pursed lips breathing with a combination of peppermint aromatherapy was proven to be effective in reducing shortness of breath and increasing oxygen saturation in CKD patients. Recommendation: the results of this nursing care can be used as a reference for the preparation of SOPs to reduce the scale of shortness of breath in patients with chronic kidney failure.
