Abstract

Background: Laparotomy is an operation performed to open the abdomen. Laparotomy is a form of major surgery by incisions in the abdominal wall layers to obtain the part of the organ experiencing problems (bleeding, perforation, cancer, and obstruction). Patients' problems that often arise after postoperative complications are a pain. The pain caused by pain mediators stimulates impulses along the nociceptor afferent nerve fibers to be interpreted as pain. Pain management with non-pharmacological measures is a method that is simpler, cheaper, practical and minimum of adverse effects. One of the nonpharmacological therapies that can be used is aromatherapy, which uses essential oil from the plant to improve mood and health. Objective: To give nursing care for patients with acute pain problem after postlaparotomy at intensive care unit of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study was a descriptive case study with a cross-sectional approach. The nurse used observation sheets and pain scale measurement (Numeric Rating Scales) as an instrument in this study. The nurse recruited five post-laparotomy patients with acute pain nursing problems as respondents. Nursing Care Results: All respondents experienced acute pain. They got pharmacology and non-pharmacology therapy as pain management. Lemon aromatherapy was given for all respondents, and they said the pain sensation was decrease than before getting treatments. Recommendation: Further research hope can apply the non-pharmacology such as lemon aromatherapy as support of pain management to reduce pain sensation
